When an army transfer goes horribly wrong, Rudy Spruance (Biggs) finds himself in the icy wasteland of Greenland instead of Hawaii, where a lazy camp is run by the eccentric Colonel Woolwrap (Northam). With repeated pleas by Spruance to convince the Colonel that a mix up has occurred falling on deaf ears and his attempts at escape proving futile, he settles down to edit the army newspaper and to romance Irene Teal (McElhone). While following the aloof Teal to a discarded bunker, Spruance discovers the secret of the base: an underground hospital ward of forgotten soldiers with no memory, where he strikes up a relationship with an unknown disfigured soldier Guy X (Ironside). Spruance takes it upon himself to uncover the mystery of the men and why Colonel Woolwrap is hiding them. Guy X tries to be everything from M*A*S*H to Stripes to Catch 22 and falls down between too many stools. Biggs is doing everything in his power to exorcise the ghost of the American Pie series and goes a long way here in doing that here, but the movie can't decide what it is trying to be.
