Due Date
Director: Todd Phillips
Starring: Jamie Foxx, Juliette Lewis, Michelle Monaghan, Robert Downey Jr., Zach Galifianakis
Details: US/94 mins 15A
Downey Jr. is a successful architect, trying to get from Atlanta to Los Angeles for the birth of his first child. But after a misunderstanding on the plane that involves Galifianakis' eccentric passenger, both men have no fly restrictions put on them and must travel by road before the sprog is dropped. But Downey Jr's Peter has his own personality flaws, and a definite nasty streak, while his travel companion has a particular way of getting under his skin, making the 2000 mile journey a shenanigan-ridden affair.
Phillips has never been a director to shy away from the crude, or abrasive; but more often than not the results showed a helmer with an extremely deft comic touch. He knows how to direct funny guys, and both Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell owe a large part of their subsequent careers to him for Old School. He's treading ground here where many other filmmakers have gone before, and it's hard not to think of both Midnight Run and Planes, Trains and Automobiles when watching Due Date.
Credit to Downey Jr., normally characters in such positions in road movies have an inherent likeability underneath their crass exteriors, but his guy has some serious issues, that Galifianakis' Ethan simply brings to the surface. Granted, most people in a similar position would have snapped earlier, but Downey Jr. does so with such genuine malice, it's hard not to be impressed with the balls it took to play it so.
Of course there are laughs here, but it's hard to shake the feeling that it could have been funnier. The best bits come when the two encounter other folk on their journey - scenes with Danny McBride and Juliette Lewis in particular are very funny - but Galifianakis isn't doing anything particularly different than The Hangover, and Downey Jr. has been funnier in other films.
It's a solid enough watch; just don't go in expecting something special. Everyone involved here has made better films before and will again in the future.

Excellent show. Would give it 4 stars no problem. On it's own it's a hilarious film but being compared to The Hangover is clouding the reviews i think. The hangover was a one off, laughs from start to finish, due date offers a little more concern for the personality of Downeys dark character in parts and of course his responsibility to get home to a wife in labour. Zach G is flawless. If you loved the hangover you'll love this.

This movie was AWFUL. I mean, really bad. It was lazy, slow, limited in genuine wit, and a complete waste of the three principal characters (the dog had one gag. One.) RDJ was irritating as an angry guy, and Galifianakis was useless. As someone who loved The Hangover, I can see how this movie has been accused of using The Hangover's leftover lines. The use of stars like Jamie Foxx was cynical, and, again, lazy. It was like most British movies these days: stack it full of stars and worry about the script's substance later. Or never. RDJ's issue with his father was a pointless addition to the plot - and it never developed. The plot was a weakly disguised version of Planes, Trains & Automobiles, with Galifianakis and RDJ playing WEAK copies of Candy and Martin, respectively. The gags were telegraphed by 5 mins (I mean, when the pickup-bouncing gag happened, it had lost all its humous). RDJ's redemption from being a bad guy was simplistic and unconvincing. I am starting to doubt entertainment.ie's reviewers. Too many soft reviews of lousy movies. Sheridan disappointed here. Be warned.

I thought it was decent. 3 stars is hardly a rave, Darren. In fairness, other people seem to have enjoyed it more than you.

Gotta say the start of this film can be a bit slow but once we meet Zach Galifianakis character you will be laughing non stop with his random quotes he is brillant. I would go and see this film HILARIOUS!!! Though it must be said not as good as the hangover but still i would give it 7/10. Go and see it :)
