Buried
Details: Spain/95mins 15A
Reynolds is Paul Conroy, a truck driver who we learn has been working in Iraq for nine months, when he is abducted and buried in a coffin underground deep in the desert. With only a mobile phone, lighter and torch for company, he soon realises he's being held for ransom. With no way of knowing where he is, Paul desperately attempts to get in contact with the right people to get him out of his living nightmare.
Director Cortes obviously wants the audience to feel as nauseatingly uncomfortable as possible. To call the staging claustrophobic would be an understatement akin to pointing out that Oprah sometimes likes to talk about feelings. The camera is perpetually placed right in Reynold's mush, capturing every single piece anguish from every angle possible. Sometimes it will cut to an overhead view, like we're watching from a few feet above, but it always feels like you're underground with Paul.
The script, whilst realistic and offering character depth in obvious, difficult to convey circumstances, would be nothing without its leading (only) man. It's hard to imagine anyone else pulling of this type of performance, in this kind of manner. Brave is a word thrown around a lot for actors in Hollywood, but Reynolds really goes through the mill here, and more often than not you get the impression the pain on his face is all too real. If this gig doesn't result in an Oscar nomination then something is seriously wrong within The Academy. Not only is it his most impressive work to date, it proves, well beyond reasonable doubt, that he is an actor with undeniable range.
Horrible and innately difficult to watch, this is an excellent, high concept film, executed with minimum fuss and featuring an astonishing Ryan Reynolds. I never want to see it again.

Why anyone would want to go and see a movie about this subject is beyond me.

I'd agree with RoochieD on this. Sounds like an excellent movie, but not my favourite topic.

I give it a D+. The whole movie is set in a coffin. In terms of film-making, thats pretty impressive - managing to tell a story in the confinement of a coffin - but I think the overall "plot" suffered because of this. I put the word plot in inverted commas, because there isnt much of a plot to speak of. Its pretty much 'Phonebooth' set in a coffin. Id give it a miss. And the ending... well, this is how it en--

I haven't seen the movie yet and i reckon the protagonist here has not seen KILL BILL 2 , where uma thurman in similar situation manages to escape and my suspicion is that where the idea for this movie originated , see i am not just a pretty face

After seeing this movie, I'd put it in the same category as Paranormal Activity, The Last Excorcism, DEVIL, etc. AKA - s**t recent movies.

Eh, TBC, with all due respect you're talking through your hoop. It's nothing like any of the above.

Loved it, thought it was just a play on the Kill Bill idea and it wouldnt pull it off but i honestly felt it was a unique cinematic experience which was worth the cinema fee for sure. However I am less impressed by ryan renolds, i think he is good but that another actor could have done the same if not better, may get an oscar nod, but i dont think it is a winner, unless we have a slow oscar season

Way to ruin the movie, Chell3, thank Jaysus i already figured it out, but you've just spoiled it for everyone else who didn't figure out the end. Seriously can't stand spoilsports who roam around the internet blabbing movie endings just for some attention.

Philistine. Thanks for ruining it. I will still go see it though. I like giving my money to people who think inside the box.

Worst film I have EVER seen, actually signed up to this website just to warn people not to see it. The WHOLE film is set in the coffin, there's not one other actor, you don't see how he got there, you don't see people trying to get him out, you don't see flashbacks. You don't even get to see the frigging sky as he didn't even get out. WHOLE film consisted of him on the phone to various people with the same basic conversation. Absolutely horrendous.

of course the whole film is set in a coffin, thats the whole point, "Buried" being the title. It's ingenious, a must see.

Basically, the movie goes like... Basically, the movie goes like... Basically, the movie goes like... -- Yep, its that repetitive. A man in a coffin talking on the phone over and over again for 95 minutes.

Best film I've seen in a long time. Very well made. Just happy I saw it before I came on here to read the reviews otherwise it would have been ruined by the ar5eholes who can't keep spoilers to themselves...
