Bridesmaids
Watch Trailer
Video Interviews with Kristen Wiig, Chris O'Dowd, Melissa McCarthy and Paul Feig
Director: Paul Feig
Starring: Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne
Details: US/124mins 16
Wiig is perpetually lost thirtysomething Annie. When she finds out that childhood best pal Lillian (an amusing Rudolph) is getting married and wants her to be Maid of Honour, she's delighted - that is, until she meets new pal Helen (a passive aggressive Byrne). A battle of wills between both women ensues, as Annie's life collapses around her and Helen takes over the preparations. The only positive thing to happen to Annie just might be a caring cop (the increasingly consistent O'Dowd), who pulls her in on a DUI - but her self-destructive personality might just mess that up, too.
Boasting more laughs than any other film so far this year, there's an effortlessness to Bridesmaids that just makes the whole thing go down very easy. Director Feig doesn't smother his cast in punchlines, instead giving his talented ensemble room to let loose and pillage the hilarity. While films of this ilk have a habit of completely zoning in on a core desperate singleton or annoying bride, the net here is cast wide and allows everyone a chance to shine. It's a testament to their fine performances that you'd like to see more of each supporting player.
The majority of the screen time does fall to Wiig, however, who does a stellar job double-gigging as writer and star. She's far from selfish with the laugh quota, either; Annie may be a self-confessed dunce, but she's a thoroughly likeable one. O'Dowd also continues his ascent up the Hollywood comedic ladder as the love interest, proving himself as a viable romantic lead.
As the three remaining bridesmaids with little exposition to shoulder, McLendon-Covey, McCarthy and Kemper are all very humorous. In fact, you could easily see each of them carry their own movie - a credit to the strong scripting and fine performances.
Boasting the kind of consistent laughs rarely seen in Hollywood, Bridesmaids could well be the most crowd-pleasing film of the year.

To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this but it was hilarious. I'm going to get slated for this but... it was better than The Hangover 2! (Quickly retreats to corner gripping spade)

Its about time women were funny :) This is one for the guys too as its girls acting like guys almost. @Damien, The Hangover 2 was a joke of a movie so dont worry about being slated. And how women can even mention the turd that is SITC is beyond me!!

I don't know why people are sooo surprised that women can be funny! I haven't seen this yet but I can't wait for it! Kristen Wiig is always a safe bet.

I loved this movie, its funny but with a heart. Each character is very believable even at their most extreme, with Meliss McCarthy stealing the show. It almost makes up for losing 2 hours of my life to the crap that was Hangover 2 -makers of Hangover 2 please note what funny looks like!

@mell61...the fact that you went to Hangover 2 is the reason it was made...they know many people go to sequels of good movies expecting another good movie. The fact that sequels are rarely good seems lost on most people.

I went to see Bridesmaids lastnight and i was sore from laughing, Hangover for women my ass!!! It's much more than that, anyone can go to vegas and lose someone along with their minds, this is a million times better. Miss this film at your peril, everyone will be talking about it after this week. Awesome film haven't laughed that hard in ages. Please Please dont ruin the funniest comedy of the year by making another one, somethings just need to be left alone. xxx

Really poor - nothing original and every joke is beaten to death to stretch out the laughs. I'd give it 2 stars.

Loved it, loved it, loved it! I walked away asking myself why I never fancied Chris O'Dowd before and where does he drink when he's in Ireland! I loved it so much I almost forgot it was an American comedy (aside from the truely awful and frankly unecessary gross out parts) - it could just as easily have been set in Dublin, everyone knows a Helen, and everyone has that group of slightly unhinged friends that try as they may they can't really get away from!

One of the funniest films I've seen in ages. Not the hangover for women because the guys in the cinema were laughing just as hard as the women! Laughed so much I nearly threw up at Melissa's on screen time. Absolute gem!

Absolutely HILARIOUS!! Saw the promo trailer and thought no way will I watch that but so glad I did! Wiig is brilliant, so funny and a very likeable character. I have seen it twice already and I'm fighting with myself as to whether I'll go to Transformers or back to see Bridesmaids again!!!!!!!

A bit of a let down, I have to say. If I hadn't heard all the hype before I went to see this, I probably would have thought it was "ok", and given it 3 stars. I was expecting something amazing, but the predictable jokes and sappy "finding yourself" towards the end left me feeling very disappointed.

Impossible not to enjoy this movie. Went with GF and we both loved it. Lots of well delivered laughs, great casting and well laid out. Better than Hangover 2 and gives the first a run for it's money!!

What in the name of god are you talking about? This film is rubbish. Mawkish, cack-handedly directed and excruciatingly awful to watch. There are a couple of laughs about 30 mins in but after that it loses its way and meanders on begging to be put out of its misery. The 'heroine' is a basket case and Chris O'Dowd has the worst american accent in the history of film. Should have been a straightahead girls-on-the-p**s-in-Vegas movie but missed the target entirely. Even for a chick-flick this is really bad. Avoid at all costs
