Martial arts superstar, Jet Li, plays three separate roles in this science fiction parable that spans several universes and depends heavily on the likes of The Matrix for inspiration. Although the premise is mind bogglingly awful, all you need to know is the three parts that Jet Li plays are the same character, each of whom exist in an alternative universe. The baddest of this bunch is Yulaw, a former agent for the Multiverse Bureau of Intelligence, who has found, and murdered, 123 versions of himself in different universes. By doing so, Yulaw has absorbed all of their mental and physical strengths to become superhuman, but the only version of himself that stands in his way of becoming 'The One' is Gabe, a hard working, genial LA sheriff's deputy.

Confused, underwritten and dreadfully acted, The One has few redeeming features, aside from the beautifully choreographed fight sequences. Impressive as Li's command of martial arts is, however, even watching him fight himself - accompanied by a predictably angst-ridden nu-metal/rap soundtrack - soon becomes tiresome. Come back Jackie Chan, all is forgiven
