I did not read the book. But if the book is better than the film then all I can say it must be a very good read indeed. I really enjoyed this entertaining and well paced film. It tells the true story of Howard Marks, a working-class boy from the Welsh coal mining area whose natural aptitude and ability earns him a place in Cambridge. Shortly after starting there he stumbles into a social scene that revolves around drugs and partying. Circumstances pull him away from this scene. He graduates to become a respectable teacher but he is drawn back into this area when he is given the opportunity to smuggle hash into Britain. We follow him on his journey to Afghanistan, through Germany and back to London, where his efforts are richly rewarded and he parties in style. He soon breaking into the drug scene in the Irish Republic via his contact with a very rookish and unpredictable IRA member played by David Thewlis. So successful is he as a drug smuggler that Marks is soon being courted by M15 who want to enlist him for their own purposes. How he manages to deal with them and all the various flotsam he meets in his career is indicative of his own ability. He soon is setting his sights on the States and it is there that things begin to unravel for him. Rhys Ifans is ideally caste as the amiable if somewhat amoral Marks. Marks is not an admirable character but he certainly has personality. While this film is an entertaining portrayal of the adventures of the life of a drug smuggler it does not shy away from the horror that comes with drug taking. A highly recommended film for its sheer entertainment value
