Best film of the year behind Son of Saul
What a whopping let-down this film was for me.... The story was slow to the point of being almost boring. The dialogue was very often rather flat. The chemistry between the pair did not shine for me. The dancing and singing were plopped in every now in a way that made the movie feel disjointed(for me). I love a romantic film but this did not inspire me by even a mere trifle... Each to their own, I guess. I'd give LaLaLaLaLa Land less than 3 stars.
I enjoyed it but not in an "over a dozen Oscar nominations" kind of a way. Emma Stone was good. I thought Ryan Gosling was miscast. Compared to musicals of bygone years, the dance scenes were found wanting. The opening scene of the traffic jam on the freeway seemed out of place with the rest of the movie - shooting a great sequence that set the atmosphere then went in a totally different direction. Still, it was enjoyable with captivating moments, colourful scenes and a good ending. Just thought it lacked the quality of a complete package to justify the hype.
This review of La La Land in the Sydney Morning Herald expresses exactly what I felt about the movie.... Their conclusion is Hollywood is patting itself in the back for (trying to) re-vamp(ing) musicals. http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/movies/la-la-land-is-a-terrible-film-but-it-will-win-best-picture-at-the-oscars-anyway-20170105-gtmpll.html
