I loved it. I think people are misunderstanding the point of the movie. It's made purposely to be comic, cartoonish. It's not trying to be the next Scarface.

Dreadful movie, one of the worst gangster films of all time. Brings nothing new to the genre, artificial and boring. You don't care about any characters.... Just play LA Noire, same scenery with better characters and a better story.

Absolutely hysterical typo in this piece. "get Cohens attention by halting his heroine supply"

@ greta : I 100% agree with you. I think the film is very misunderstood by critics. They're going in thinking its trying to be The Untouchables when it's not, it's trying to be a cartoon/comic-hyper Gangster film. The name (and poster/trailer) gave that away.

This film is reminiscent of The Untouchables , but with the violence ratcheted up several levels. Sean Penn as Micky Cohen, a ruthless gang leader, delivers a truly brilliant performance. Whenever he appeared on the screen I was afraid of him. He really was that good. Josh Brolin is the guy that is taxed with the job of bringing him down, and he assembles a crack team for the job. Once the action started I felt it had the feel of a comic super hero film . They seemed to be invincible and the film quickly races to its conclusion without any surprises. Having said that it is very enjoyable and worth the admission price alone to see Sean Penn.

Interesting film. Lots of violence. Reminded me of boardwalk empire.

Okay I see, one says its a boring nothing special bad movie, while the other "woow what a what amazing movie". So now which one then? I think I take the bad one. Stupid title anyway. Gangster squad? What the hell is that? In my taste we need to wait at least 10 years always to get one good movie.

Prior to seeing this movie, I ddn't expect to go in and see The Untouchables, however I did expect a movie with logic. Gangster Squad, in most scenes thrives on cliche'd sequences that manage to reference the movies we have argued it failed to resemble. I knew what I was in for when we get introduced to Josh Brolin's untouchable character. You accept that and enjoy it for what it is folks. Obviously the likes of gangster movies in the past were created by a different class of both actors and directors so comparing them is nonsense. And let's not forget, apart from De Niro, The Untouchables was also pretty mundane. Gangster Squad is popcorn entertainment. Don't expect to remember the majority of performances, although Sean Penn makes a good impression.
