That's if Mullingar resident Michael O'Leary has his way.

Yes, the Ryanair boss has said that he wants to offer one-way fares to the States for under €100, but says that it might be some time.

Ryanair have said they're keen to break into the trans-Atlantic market and offer their cheap-as-chips ticket prices to travellers.

O'Leary wants to create an off-shoot of Ryanair that would cater solely for long-haul flights such as United States, which would bring him into direct competition with Lufthansa and British Airways.

As for when this is likely to happen? Not any time soon.

O'Leary says that the long-haul service is at least five years away, as Ryanair will have to purchase 30 to 50 planes to carry passengers.

The plan, according to O'Leary, is to fly between 15 major European airports and 15 major US airports - no doubt including New York and Los Angeles.

Any excuse to play Neil Diamond, really.
