As American's reeled from the latest shooting in an American college (this time in UCC Roseburg, Oregon) James Corden had the unenviable task of opening up his comedy show. Here's how he managed that...

"I can't imagine what it would be like, waving to my son or daughter as they leave for college, for them not to return... our thoughts and your prayers are with you... We recorded this show earlier today as usual. Hopefully it can bring some levity and light before this day is over."

While people across America expressed their shock and horror at what had just happened in Oregon...

... President Obama was a little more matter of fact. In his statement after this latest shooting, he said: "Our thoughts and prayers are not enough. It is NOT enough... It does nothing to prevent this carnage happening again in America... We need to politicise this."

He then points out that America is not the only advanced nation that has mental illness. Despite this, they're the only country with repeated mass shootings. "It has become routine. My response it routine.... we've become numb to this."
