We all know that one person in our group who insists on coming to dinner or lunch and taking a snap on Instagram before sharing it on Facebook and then chatting on Whatsapp, never once looking at any of the people who are actually in the room with them.

Honestly, we regularly question why we're friends with them, but their days may be numbered with the release of a new app that will encourage and reward them for actually talking to real people. What a world we live in...

The app is called Apple Tree and works when two users bring their phones together and touch them off one another. The phone is then locked and the screen displays an apple tree (see what they did there) growing fruit, and the more you have at the end when you pull your phones apart, the more discounts or rewards you are eligible for, so long as you're not using any other apps during that time.

It was designed by three Singaporean students and they submitted the app idea for the Splash Awards this year, for which the theme was to design something that can bring Singaporeans closer together. They were awarded SG$30,000 (€18,542) for their hard work, and speaking to News Channel Asia, one of the students Libern Lin said that they came up with the idea after his friends suggested placing their phones together when they hung out so that they would talk to each other.
