A motorist who used the M50 over 1,000 times but never paid the toll last year is facing a pretty hefty bill.

The driver took to the road 1,018 times last year, and as a result has been hit with a bill of €155,000, which is a pretty serious chunk of change.

The normal rate for a driver who has not registered for the barrier free tolling system is €3.10, so the driver would have paid a significantly lower amount if they'd done that, but instead is facing the maximum fine of €152.60 for each unpaid journey.

Sean O'Neill of the National Roads Authority said that "there is no cap on what a driver can owe if he makes multiple passages without paying", and that legal proceedings can be issued as a result of unpaid fines, with personal property being repossessed to cover the costs in some cases.

In 2014, the 43 million journeys made on the road brought in around €100 million, but 4% of drivers didn't pay, costing the State around €5 million.
