Bernard Huston of Letterkenny, Donegal was out gardening in his back-yard yesterday morning with his 9-year old stepson.

Amidst digging up weeds and so on, Bernard discovered an MK2 grenade - commonly known as an Iron Pineapple.

Bernard quickly moved the young child away from the discovered ordnance and told his wife.

Her response? "She told me to stop coming up with stupid excuses and finish and not to be so lazy and finish the garden."

The Gardai and the Army's EOD team were soon contacted and the area was sealed off, but detectives - and Bernard himself - are baffled as to how the grenade got there in the first place.

Residents have now returned to their homes since being evacuated and as for Bernard? He's back in the garden, finishing the job.

"I'm just delighted to get back and to be able to finish the garden off in this lovely weather. Sure what's the chance of finding another live hand grenade in your garden?"

The grenade has since been removed from the garden and Gardai are investigating the matter.
