The HSE has denied that Ireland has its first case of Ebola after a woman was taken to hospital earlier today with symptoms that were similar to the virus.

Shortly after 12:00pm today a woman was taken from her apartment in West Dublin to the Mater Hospital after she appeared to have symptoms of the virus and had recently returned from Africa.

She was taken to the isolation unit and paramedics in Hazmat-style suits and a large Garda presence were in the area afterwards. However, the HSE issued a statment in the last few minutes that ruled out the possibility of it being Ebola, and that the disease has not entered Ireland.

The statement said "the patient was considered a low risk for the Ebola Virus but this has now been ruled out" adding that they "take each Ebola scenario seriously no matter how low the risk" and "there are no known cases of Ebola in Ireland presently."

They also confirmed that they have strict and appropriate and infection control procedures which were followed by all personnel and that "the overall risk of a case of Ebola being brought into in Ireland is low."
