19-year old Alecia Pennington has started an online campaign to help prove her citizenship.
It's a bit of a weird situation. As she explains in her video, Alecia was born at home in rural Texas and was home-schooled her entire life. Her parents never filed a birth certificate, never brought her to the hospital and never had any school records.
At 19 years of age, Alecia simply has no record of officially existing in the normal sphere of government. She can't vote, she can't get a bank account, she can't get a passport - yet she was born in the States and, as far as we know, is a natural-born US citizen.
So what happens now? As she explains, she's contacted the local authorities and tried to file a birth certificate, but to no avail and is now appealing for help on the Internet to anyone who's in a similar situation.
It's one of those really bizarre cases where someone literally falls through the cracks of government bureaucracy.
Her video was posted to reddit.com and has received over 2,000 comments and interactions so far.
