Sega might have lost out on the console wars back in the '90s, but there's no denying that Sega was infinitely more cooler than Nintendo by a long shot.

For one, the games seemed more adult and much more complex than the cutesy world of Nintendo and, as well, you also had that incredible music and a wide variety of genres to boot. Anyway, the reason we're bringing all this up is because Sega is cashing on retro fever by announcing a new service for mobile players.

Sega Forever will see a huge swathe of classics from the Mega Drive / Genesis released on mobile for absolutely free, with $1.99 to get rid of ads. As well as this, the games will come with leaderboards, support for Bluetooth controllers, save games and faithful emulations as well.

Sonic The Hedgehog - naturally - is the first game to be made available for free, with Comix Zone, Phantasy Star and Altered Beast also being made available. Sonic the Hedgehog was previously available on mobile, however this marks the first time it's been offered for free. Sega have committed to releasing new games every two weeks, with favourites like Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Alien Storm and more set for the service.

It's a smart move by Sega, and considering how successful Super Mario Run was for Nintendo, it makes sense that they're moving towards mobile games. The first batch of games are available now on iOS and Android, and Sega is also discussing bringing Dreamcast and Saturn games to the service in time as well.

Here's the cheesy AF launch trailer.
