If you had a NES in the late '80s or early '90s, it is almost a certainty that you played Super Mario Bros. and there's a good chance you saw this guy at some point.

You most likely saw him again in Super Mario Kart, Super Mario World, and almost every other entry in the Super Mario franchise. He's Toad, he's the weird guy with the mushroom on his head that for many years people argued was either a part of his head or perhaps just a hat of some kind.

Well, for whatever reason that is as yet unclear to us all, Nintendo has now decided to end almost 32 years of speculation and mystery on the topic and put us all out of our daily misery.

Friends, readers, it's a part of his head.

That poor, poor man. He has to carry a giant mushroom around on his shoulders. How horribly deformed is his skull? How does his neck support the weight of it? If he picks at it, does it go into skin or it is like in The Simpsons when Homer's head was turned into a donut? Does it smell? What about that cartoon where he took it off as a hat and revealed a balding head underneath?

The reveal came from one of the developers of Super Mario Odyssey, Yoshiaki Koizumi, who said that he was "going to have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that works out."

Man was not meant to have this knowledge.
