After nearly 24 years of waiting and watching, crossplay across different platforms is finally becoming a reality and 'Fortnite' will be the first game to feature it.

Sony announced today that beta-testing is due to begin for 'Fortnite' across the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Mac, PC, and Nintendo Switch - but stopped short of announcing a specific date for the tests to begin. The statement added that "(the) first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems."

"We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective," it continued.

Cross-play has been something that's been mooted as a possibility for several years, since the dawn of online gaming, however Sony has almost always been reticent against it. Given the huge success of 'Fortnite', allowing for crossplay feels like the next logical step.

The question now, of course, is whether it'll actually work.
