In fact, it isn't even Ryan Reynolds, who's voicing the character for the bizarre upcoming live-action film.

The latest trailer for the hotly-anticipated Nintendo 3DS game sees the well-known Pokemon suddenly endowed with a human, male, American voice that sounds sort of like Kazuhira Miller from Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

It's... odd, to be honest. Take a look at the new trailer which landed online yesterday.

Not surprisingly, long-time fans of the series couldn't really cope with Detective Pikachu's voice.

Just in case you're wondering why Danny DeVito was mentioned in the headline, there was a real-life, actual petition mounted last year to have him voice Detective Pikachu - and, well, it didn't work out. Obviously.

Detective Pikachu is released on Nintendo 3DS on March 23rd.
