Back in the day, Mortal Kombat was known for two things - being ridiculously violent and having a ton of cheats.

These ranged from finding a secret character in Mortal Kombat (Reptile) to a hidden game in Mortal Kombat II (Pong), but there were rumours of even more secretive cheats and hidden menus locked away in the game that were never found.

As it turns out, one of these rumours is actually true. For anyone that's worked on an arcade machine or had one, they'll know that there's a button you can press once the coin-door is open that'll bring up a few diagnostic tools and the ability to reset the entire machine. Pretty much every arcade cabinet has them.

However, what you don't know - and was only discovered by an arcade enthusiast this week - is that Mortal Kombat I, II and Ultimate Mortal Kombat III came with a secret menu that could only be accessed via a specific sequence of buttons pushed on the cabinet. These cabinets, by the way, are over twenty years old. This feature was more or less hidden in that entire time. The menu, known as the EJB Menu - in reference to Ed J. Boon, the series creator - was an urban legend for many years and was only recently discovered by

So, what do these secret menus do? Well, not a lot, really. They show all the diagnostic tools for the cabinet, however they also the player to access a few secret options that weren't available anywhere else. For example, Ultimate Mortal Kombat III came with a hidden game that wasn't a million miles away from Galaga that nobody knew about. Mortal Kombat II had a secret Fatality Demo option that, again, nobody knew about. Each cabinet's menu also had an option to show you the endings of each and every character without having to play the whole way through.

It's true, unless you had any of these massive arcade cabinets in your house, you'd never know about any of this. However, for those of us who are old enough to remember Mortal Kombat being in arcades, this is pretty nuts.

Here's the full, 10-minute video where he made the discovery. It's passed over ONE MILLION views in a single week.
