There's lots of fun – for players who like to practice – to be had in Call of Duty One by picking up a sniper rifle, pressing a button to steady the gun and attempting a head shot from half way across the map. So when a game comes along lauding itself solely a shooter for sniping fans it's worth getting excited. Unfortunately when that game is Sniper Ghost Warrior expect to be disappointed.
Positive bits first. Sniper Ghost Warrior is colourful, good looking and seemingly set in a vibrant open environment. Plus it's refreshing to play a shooter than doesn't use the Unreal engine – the game is based on Chrome 4 engine last seen in Call of Juarez. However, after a few minutes it becomes clear that this is actually an on the rails shooter quick to punish disobedient players with invisible walls, instant death or mission failure.
It's not really a sniping game either. The mechanics are so simplified – compared to any of the Tom Clancy games – that it's impossible to notice any difference between sniping and looking down the iron sights or scopes found in the plethora of forgettable shooters out there. Then there's the broken checkpoint system, dodgy AI and screen tearing. I'd go on but it was at this point that I found myself reaching for the eject button.
