For all us Trekkies out there, there has been a black hole in our lives where a good Star Trek video game should be. You'd think that given the huge, expansive universe that one could be based on, making an enjoyable game out of it would be as easy as shooting tribbles in a barrel. But unfortunately, this has not been the case, as most Star Trek games have failed to properly convey the feeling of the shows and movies they were made to represent.

Warp forward to later on this month, and we've got the release of Star Trek, a third-person action-adventure to be released on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Brought to us by Digital Extremes - best known for having a hand in the likes of Unreal, Bioshock and Homefront - as well as being co-developed by Bad Robot and Paramount, Star Trek will tell the story of what happened between the 2009 blockbuster and this summer's upcoming sequel.

Given the green light by movies director JJ Abrams, the game features the likeness and voices of Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu) and Anton Yelchin (Checkov). Facing off against classic enemy The Gorn - who featured in a solitary episode of the original Star Trek series, but have remained a firm fan favourite to this day - the crew of the Enterprise look to be defending New Vulcan against the enemy alien race.

Speaking after its launch at E3 last year, Brian Miller, vice president of Paramount, had this to say about the game: "You will have elements of a shooter. You'll have elements of exploration, and adventure, and discovery. That is what the new Star Trek is about."

Star Trek: The Game will be out on April 26th, quickly followed by Star Trek Into Darkness, which hits cinemas on May 9th. Both the game and the movie can be pre-booked for purchase right now.
