Charming fans with its mixture of humour, creativity and originality, 2007's Portal was a unanimous success. Makers Valve, famous for being the minds behind the seminal Half Life games, turned a genre in a direction never attempted. Here was a game where logical thinking overcame trigger bashing; where solving one seemingly impossible head-scratcher was somehow more fulfilling than finishing most other titles.
And now, the inevitable sequel as arrived in the form of Portal 2. While veterans of its predecessor will feel right at home, this is a title that's perfect for newcomers to come on board and see what all the fuss is really about. Portal 2 is a now a bigger universe, the characters more varied, and from that opening moment when you first wake up from that seemingly immeasurable slumber and Stephen Merchant's Wheatley welcomes you into the universe, it's a story that rarely bores, and all too often amuses.
Thankfully the puzzles are the right side of fair, with simple logical thinking often winning out. Add in a co-op mode that's on a pair with the single-player there's plenty of reason to return too.
A witty, original treat.
