The latest first person shooter to grace the next-gen, Borderlands has it's tongue tucked firmly in cheek. You start off by being dropped off on alien-world Pandora, a place ravaged by war and desolation, and lushly stylized with a fine cell-shaded gloss. From the opening intro, the presentation and unique atmosphere really strikes you.

The game's strongest point, though, is the level of customization on offer, including adjusting what your chosen character looks like, to the opportunity of finding a dizzying array of weapons from real-world to fictional, with each explosive tool becoming more proficient and effective as the quest progresses – which you can also do with up to for players.

Borderlands should be commended for trying to bring something new to the convoluted first-person market, and the fact you can restart the game after completion with your skills and accomplishments gained in the first play through, increases replay value to even encourage exploring Pandora for a third time.

A deceptively intelligent shooter.
