Superheroes and games have a checkered history, so when a title comes along that's both entertaining and makes you feel like Batman it's worth taking notice.

In Batman: Arkham Asylum you play the caped crusader as he attempts to escape a trap set by a supposedly imprisoned Joker. The game does a superb job of making you feel like Batman and it's immensely satisfying to hide on top of a stone gargoyle listening to the Joker's minions running around in fear before swooping down and picking one off.

This is a stealth action title where you deploy Batman's tools, such as detective vision, to disarm the Joker's traps. However, it's not all puzzles and exploration and there's plenty of moments where you'll get to take down the goons and supervillains with stylish combos, takedowns and even Batarangs.

The game looks good but the voice acting and sound effects really stand out. The Joker, who is voiced by Mark Hamill, is the star but everyone from the Dark Knight to the run of the mill enemies sound like they've been peeled from Batman canon. And the music, just like in the last film, is superbly atmospheric.

This title is one of the best released this year. If you are a Batman fan there is a wealth of tidbits to keep you occupied long after you've finished the 10-12 hour main story, such as collectables and challenge maps. And if you don't like Batman this game still deserves to be played.
