Alien vs. Predator is a follow up to a celebrated 1999 PC title by the same name. It features three single player campaigns - the alien, predator and marine each have their own story - and Rebellion Developments have included a multiplayer component.

Unfortunately, the game doesn't seemed to have evolved too much since 1999. The environments look generic and there are blocky textures galore. The gameplay isn't that inspired or original either. It's basically an on-the-rails by-the-numbers shooter, which is a real shame considering the potential of the franchises. Even the multiplayer component lacks many of the refinements of today's releases, such as a decent ranking system.

It's not all bad though. The sound effects, from the ping of the pulse rifles to the hiss of the aliens, are fantastic and in keeping with the films. The gory finishing moves of the creatures feel right too and best of all actor Lance Henriksen (the robot in the Alien films) appears.

Suffice to say that's not going to convince gamers who aren't fans of either franchise.
