With it being that time of the year again, Paddy’s Day that is, we thought we’d find a few highlights to celebrate the day, or the weekend as it seems to be the case.

But knowing you as we do, we thought you wouldn’t want to be stuck warming a bar stool for the day, or simply watch the parade. No, you’re going to want to try something a bit different this year, and we’ve got your back.

Guinness Store House:

If you haven’t been to the Guinness Storehouse before, there’s no better time. Sure, it will probably be full of tourists, but sure that only adds to the sense of national pride when you see the awe-stuck Americans gaze in wonderment at the secrets of the black stuff.
The Storehouse has events planned over the whole weekend, which include tours, food, drink, music, and not least the Six Nations game played on a big screen on Saturday, which will include insights from Ireland International, Fergus McFadden, and Off The Ball presenter Joe Molloy.

Funfairs in Dublin:

This will be running over the weekend at both Merrion Square and The Custom House, as well as on Patrick’s Day itself. With everything from waltzers to carousels, there’s something for all the family, whether you want to get away from parade, or kill some time in the build up to it. Right in the middle of the city, it’ll take little effort to get down to the fairs, and come, it’s in the name, you’re bound to have a little fun.

Irish Beer & Whiskey Festival

I know we said this is a list of things to get away from pubs, but how could you pass up a drink on Paddy’s Day, sure it’s practically tradition. And if you’re going to have a drink, there’s few better places than a beer and whiskey festival.

Held on the RDS, and running from Saturday to Tuesday, you’ve plenty of time to get over to enjoy the drink, the food, plus all the music and entertainment. Entry is €10 and that includes a free glass that you can take home, and half a pint to start you off.

Paddy’s Night Fleadh – Cork Opera House

Is there anything more Irish than a bit of diddley-aye? If there is, then we haven’t heard it. This gig is a great way to get away from all of the generic celebrations, and embrace a some of your musical roots. John Spillane, Jimmy Crowley, Karen Casey, Niall Vallely, Pulses of Tradition, Anna Mitchell will all be playing, so there’ll be plenty to keep you entertained, and all for only €17.
