International Comedy Club | This weekend!

This weekend sees two Dublin comedians take to the stage in International Bar. For those who like their comedy well-crafted there's Jarlath Regan, and for those of you that prefer a more off-the-cuff (and sometimes off-the-wall) approach, there's Johnny Candon, a longtime comic who supported Ricky Gervais in his tour, Animals, and Neil Delamere on his Creme Delamere tour of Ireland.

While both comedians are from Dublin, that's where their similarities end. The two comics have quite different styles - Regan is crafted while Johnny is much looser in his approach, constantly going off topic. Regan tends to stick to everyday situations whereas Candon is prone to wild flights of fancy.

As a college graduate and a former auditor of the Literary and Historical Society in UCD, it's no surprise that Regan's humour is the more intellectual of the two. With his broadcaster's voice and academic accomplishments, he isn't what you expect from a comedian, but Regan uses his clear mind to find humour in everyday situations and lovers of profanities should know that he drops just as many F-bombs as any other comedian.

Well known from his Irish TV appearances on The Panel and The Craig Doyle Show, Regan excels in making comedy which is universally funny.

Eg. "In Ireland, alcohol is like the boyfriend who's no good for us - he smells, he's the reason you're broke at the moment and every time you're out with him, you either end up crying or making a dick out of yourself."

Coming from a working class background, Candon is a more typical comedian. He has been on the comedy scene in Ireland and England (where he now lives) for a long time and has performed in Europe, Asia and Australia.

He was also one of the founding members of the Robin Ince Book Club, performing with the man himself as well as Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand, Simon Amstell and James Franco.

Candon is a master of unexpected humour, with punchlines often coming out of nowhere.

Eg. "Girlfriend: Do you think we'll be together forever?

Johnny: The way I see us is we're like two leaves being blown by a lovely wind, and one day we got blown together, but maybe one day in the future we'll be blown apart and blown in different directions and I'll get stuck to a leaf with bigger tits."

So whether you like your humour tight or loose, you're guaranteed to get a laugh this weekend at International Bar.

Regan and Candon play the International Bar, Exchequer St. from Thursday 27th-Saturday 29th. 10 Euro on the door.
