Getting to know Lloyd Langford

Interview by: Caroline Foran

Describe yourself in three words:
I'm Lloyd Langford.

Original! Tell us how you started in comedy.
From about 11 I was involved in amateur dramatics and seemed to gravitate towards comedy roles. When I got to University, I was disappointed to find the theatre society a nest of insufferable luvvie tools. I figured that I could write and perform my own stuff. Also it would be easier to remember than someone else's script.

What did you want to be growing up?
Left alone by my parents.

What would you be doing if you weren't doing stand up?
Thinking of lies to put on a CV.

Who is your biggest comedy inspiration?
Stephen Jenkins. A boy I went to school with. He's a funny fucker.

How would you describe your style of comedy?
It's a mix of stuff I guess. Anecdotes, observations, ad-libs. Like a humorous chowder. Can you tell I'm not very good at self-promotion?

Humorous chowder is good enough for us. Who are you most enjoying in comedy right now?
Good question. I did a festival recently with Ed Gamble and he made me laugh a lot. Giddy enthusiasm and great at working a room.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I genuinely don't know where I'll be in September yet. Lets not get ahead of ourselves.

Tell us of your most embarrassing moment to date.
In comedy? When I was starting out, forgetting Simon Evan's name midway through introducing him onto the stage. Someone in the front row handed me a flyer and I read it from that. It was awkward. He was cool with it but I felt mortified.

Cringe! Most romantic thing you've ever done for someone/had done for you?
I built a white marble mausoleum in Agra in memory of my third wife, Mumtaz.

Nice. What's the best thing about being Lloyd Langford?
I've travelled all over the world and worked with some great comedians, doing a job I love.
