I Am Legend
Three stars, but only just. - r1crawford
The film was really heading in a great direction until they killed it with another Hollywood ending, and a bad one at that. After setting an interesting tale (based on the book of the same name) the final few chapters in the film are just rushed, make little sense, have a huge number of plot-holes, and use so many crappy clichés, that you'll walk out wondering "what the hell just happened to that interesting movie I had been watching!" Smith does a good job, playing a very familiar role to him, but this is miles away from being Oscar material. Those who enjoyed the book will not enjoy this version to be made into film (the third attempt on the big screen). The use of the title of the book, and the use of the title of the film, are both miles apart. The ending of the book leaves you surprised and gives you food for thought; the film just lets you down. I've nothing against Hollywood endings, when they are done well, but this was really bad. The CGI effects on the creatures are awful. They look incredibility fake. They regularly defy laws of physics, i.e. at the end one of them repeatedly cracks his head against a bullet-proof glass wall, and yet doesn't even suffer bruising or a minor cut????? This is the same creature that set a complex trap for Smith, and yet uses its head to open a bullet-proof door???? For some bizarre reason we are given a 'God intervention' towards the end of the film. It just comes out of no where. It's as if they either ran out of ideas or just ran out of money and needed a quick fix. Like I said, the first 3/5 of the film is really good, with some fantastic effects and a great story. But the final 2/5 really let the film down, as it is rushed and Hollywood at it's worst.
