For want of a more sophisticated phrase - this movie rocked! I remember hearing about it when it was in cinemas and thought it sounded very pretentious and something I really wouldn't enjoy. The only thing that made me curious was that I heard Robert Downey Jnr and Val Kilmer were very good in it and had real chemistry.

We open with Harry the petty thief stealing presents for his children for Christmas. Through a fortunate coincidence he escapes police by running into a building that happens to be auditioning for a movie. Distraught about his partner in crime left behind and the pathetic nature of his life he breaks down and gives a convincing performance which lands him a trip to LA for a screen test. Once in LA he runs into a friend from highschool and the love interest harmony. Kilmer, who plays a detective is schooling Harry for his part in the movie, comes in useful when dead bodies seem to attract themselves to Harry. When Harmony's sister commits suicide the trio set on unravelling the case.

The chemistry between Kilmer and Downey Jnr is exceptional. The script is very quick and funny and the two characters bounce off one another right the way through. The narration from Downey Jnr is used lightly and to very good comedic effect. The recurring jokes about grammar and logic had me in stitches laughing due to their randomness and use considering the perils the characters are in when arising.

A quick script, great performances, humour and a story that holds you makes this one definitely worth the cost of a DVD.
