P.S., I Love You
Accent-uate the negatives - Cascarino
Tom Cruise in "Far and Away" took stick for his impersonation of a Connemara man but he was infinitely more credible than Gerald Butler in this. The Wicklow accent is perhaps one of the more easily discernible in Ireland and yet Butler, who plays Gerry, fails patently to get anywhere near it and sounds like a typical American stage-Irish leprechaun saying "top of the mornin' to you". I'm sorry, but I simply couldn't get past that to try and enjoy this film. I have deducted at least 2 points from my rating for this problem alone, and make no apologies for doing so. "PS, I Love You" does have the makings of a decent film and there was no real reason why it couldn't rival the likes of Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze's "Ghost" from the early 90s. But, while there were vaguely moving moments in the early stages, it fails to spark in any serious way and just ends up being a forgettable mess. The film introduces us to Irishman Gerry and New York girl Holly (Hilary Swank) in the first scene, as we see them having a typical lovers tiff before quickly kissing and making up. Shortly afterwards, we find out that Gerry has died of a brain tumour and Holly is devastated, consoled by her family and close friends, one of whom is played by Lisa Kudrow, in her usual role as an abrasive and blunt man-eater. Surrounded by her supporting cast on her 30th birthday, Holly unexpectedly gets a package in the post from her dead husband, who tells her not to mourn him but to go out and enjoy herself. A great release comes over her and she follows his advice, only to soon find that these packages become a regular event. For me, Gerry's plan is more creepy and selfish than romantic as Holly is not allowed to grieve in her own way and get on with her life. But by this stage in the film I was just too obsessed with the general shoddyness of the whole thing and unconvinced by any of the characters, despite my admiration for Swank, who is a great actress and oscar winner but can't seem to pick consistently good parts for herself. "PS, I Love You" will have a market out there for undiscerning female audiences who swallow this kind of thing like Philadelphia on crackers but for me it really is very mediocre stuff. 2 out of 5 at a stretch
