Precious
Real Life Challenges in Dysfunctional Family - munsterlad
A very real life movie where everything is presented as raw as possible and there is no gloss put over any of the characters. It can be viewed as a movie that throws us into the world of teenage girl Precious who is getting all the abuse from her parents, mother and father and has already fathered one of her father's child yet in the midst of all this, she keeps imagining wonderful things for herself to keep escaping the harsh reality. She goes to school, comes home, does all the house chores and on top of that is physically and verbally abused by her mother. She still wants a better life for herself and enrolls into a school for troubled teenagers where she finds an inspiring teacher who takes interest in Precious's well being.
Precious learns to read and write and gives birth to a healthy baby boy in exceptional circumstances. As she has been beaten up by her mother on return back home after delivery, she finds shelter in the school and her teacher once again comes for her rescue. The defining scene of the movie falls at the end when she is sitting in Mariah Carey's office and her mother comes in and tells her interpretation of Precious's life events.
It seems that everything might start to work out for Precious but her mother later comes back to tell Precious that her abusive father is dying of AIDS. Precious decides to take HIV test and learns that she is infact infected by AIDS but she still doesn't give up and gets both her children back and continues to live on her own terms.
A lesson of inspiration in the face of difficulty.
