Superman Returns

Almost Super!!! - Aidan Lucid

Running time: 157 minutes. Rated: 12 A Key players: Brandon Routh (Superman/Clark Kent) Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane) Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor) James Marsden (Richard White) Parker Posey (Lex Luthor's girlfriend, Kitty Kowalski).               It's that time of the year again when the blockbusters on DVD roll up to eek our hard earned cash out of our pockets and when grown up men become giggly about the upcoming comic movies, purchasing the DVD for their kids as an excuse to see them. Instead of a vigilante dressed in the guise of a bat jumping onto our screens or a friendly neighbourhood web-slinger swinging across New York City, it's the king of all comic book heroes and a man who is not ashamed to wear red underwear outside blue tights…it's Superman! Does this sequel do the Man of Steel any justice, however? Quite simply, yes. Well, sort of. First of all, for those of you who fear that newcomer, Brandon Routh may not fill the boots of the great Christopher Reeves, let me quell those fears for you because indeed, he does do a super job (excuse the pun). In fact, there are times he looks uncannily like Mr. Reeves, so much so that one has to blink twice to see if it is him. He fills the suit accordingly with his physique and has all the right movements as the blue and red hero. Right, now that we got that little issue out of the way, let's get down to the balls of the matter, the movie itself. From the word go, the director, Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects, X-men 1&2) gives the nod of his inspiration to Reeves's movies using the same flying opening credits from Superman 1 and 2. The rousing music in the opening of the film, composed by John Ottmann, gets you in the mood and sends chills up and down your spine. Singer sort of takes the story from the end of Superman II where the Man of Steel returns to Earth after an absence of five years when he searched for his home planet, Krypton. He returns home crash landing in a special spaceship on his farm in Kansas where his beloved mother Martha Kent (Eva Marie Saint), has been anxiously waiting for him. Upon his arrival back to Metropolis where he resumes his job as a reporter for the Daily Planet, he learns that the world has gotten used to living without him. But what perturbs the hero even more is that the love of his life, Lois Lane has moved on and is engaged to Richard White (James Marsden) and also has a son named Jason. Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey) has also escaped out of prison and plans to take revenge on the being who put him behind bars, by using the crystals in Superman's, “Fortress of Solitude” and learns secrets about the Kryptonian's past and his weaknesses. Using this power, Luthor intends to destroy all of America and build his own island and gain prosperity in the property business. This indeed, does look like a job for Superman! Let's get one thing straight, “Superman Returns” is a great movie and Singer may have resurrected an ailing franchise, but the film does have its weaknesses. The script is full of unanswered questions like, “Who was that lady in the start with Lex Luthor?” and “If Superman's home planet, Krypton was destroyed, why would he go looking for it?” Also, if you are expecting balls out action and Superman kicking some ass, then I am afraid that you may be a little disappointed. Even though there are some great action sequences and spectacular special effects, there is simply not enough use of Superman's abilities. There are some great shots in this movie especially when Superman soars above the clouds and floats in mid-air facing the sun. Truly iconic imagery and looks absolutely amazing! The story does seem to circle around the love triangle of Clark/Superman, Lois and Richard a bit too long. As mentioned before, Brandon plays his part to perfection both as Superman and Clark Kent, but Bosworth may not have been the best actress casted for the role. She lacks the gusto and bravery of past Lois Lanes. But what she lacks in that area, Ms. Bosworth makes up for it in the love scenes where she and Routh oozes chemistry onscreen. James Marsden who plays Richard White (also Psyclops in X-men 1-3) is outstanding in the movie. His character is Superman without all the powers. He's nice, caring and heroic. Kevin Spacey however, nearly steals the show in his portrayal as the evil Lex Luthor. Admittedly, he does go over the top at times but never to the extent where one thinks he is silly. He brings a more malevolent side to the character played by Gene Hackman in the '80s. Verdict: Superman does “Return” and with a great director at the helm, but fans of the Man of Steel might end up going away a little disappointed when the credits start to roll. It does however, leave you looking forward to the sequel and here's hoping that Singer will do slightly better next time.
