Atonement

A Must-See Film - Lorraine

Viewer Rating:Lorraine has rated Atonement rating: 4 Star

Atonement, based on the best-selling novel by Ian McEwan, is an epic drama that spans from 1935 through the early years of WWII and into the present day. It centres on Briony, a naïve budding writer, as she tries to atone for a terrible error in judgement she made as a child that lead to the enforced separation of her older sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley) from her lover, their house-keeper's son Robbie (James McAvoy). The film is beautifully shot, in particular a remarkably choreographed set piece of the mass evacuation of British troops from Dunkirk during which the camera moves through a group of singing soldiers and a barroom brawl. Young Irish actress Saoirse Ronan (soon to be seen in Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones) far outshines the more accomplished actresses, Romola Garai and Vanessa Redgrave, who play the character of Briony at an older age. The love story at the heart of the film is sensitively rendered and the chemistry between Knightley and McAvoy is undeniable, with McAvoy really impressing as an aspiring doctor forced to fight in WWII. Deserving of the Oscar nominations that it received, Atonement is a must-see, especially for period drama fans.

Not a bad movie but very arty and a lot of cinematography tricks and general 'dick-swinging'. The French and Italians do these movies much better. MORE
