It's becoming difficult to remember what constituted a decent comedy film pre-Will Ferrell. Since the affable loon hit the big time via roles in Elf,Zoolander and most notably Anchorman,Hollywood's funny factory has churned out innumerable dumb-ass capers in an effort to reproduce the delicious absurdity of characters like Ferrell's own Ron Burgundy.Step Brothers is the latest in a long line of features whose storylines are slighter than those to be found in a 5 minute Looney Tunes cartoon,choosing instead to rely on the bankability of the acting talent on show.From this perspective,the reunion of Ferrell and John C. Reilly after their successful double act in Talladega Nights makes perfect box-office sense.However,this particular film's plot is so utterly vapid that there is often little or no context to the combination of goof-ridden set-pieces and inane one-liners that have become par for the course in American comedy.Ferrell and Reilly play Brennan and Dale respectively,a couple of 40-year-old losers who still live at home and harbour no ambitions of changing that scenario in the forseeable future.The duo's wastrel existences are thrown into disarray,however,when their singleton parents (played by Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins) cross paths.One quickfire wedding later,the two guys are stuck sharing a house,a room and their hallowed personal space.Cue a mounting farce as the pair trade initial hositilities before discovering a common enemy in the shape of Brennan's brother Derek,thereafter becoming best friends and proving a monumental pest to their newlywed parents.There's really very little else to the film,although the plot was never supposed to be anything more than a canvas for the two stars to gleefully splash their gags onto.Unfortunately,despite some genuinely funny moments and the obvious rapport between Ferrell and Reilly,the laughs are spread a little thin and in the absence of a storyline to pick up the slack Step Brothers feels a little jaded and uneven.That won't stop Will Ferrell fans getting a kick from his customary silliness,but for others this may well be more suited to a rental than a trip to the cinema.
