Lars and the Real Girl
A modern Classic - David
Every few years i am lucky enough to watch a movie that when it ends and the credits roll i remain in situ digesting the story that has just unfolded. Lars and the real girl is one such film - a film that reminds us what film making should be all about. We may be inundated with big budget special effects blockbusters throughout the summer months while generic rom coms, thrillers, and spoof comedy's are churned out of Hollywood at a rate of knots all year long but there are still great films jsut about making it through. A film such as this can tell a story in a way that no other medium could. A mix of storytelling, directing and acting at its best. This is a fine example of a modern alternative take on themes that are part and parcel of modern day life. As your act of goodwill for the year tell others to watch this film but do not tell them the concept behind it. The mere mention of a life like sex doll being taken into Lars life as his girlfiend will get minds racing in different directions and may turn them away from this exquisitely perrformed story. This film addresses the themes of love, lonliness and detachment from reality in a way i have never seen before. The concept and storyline are borderline incomprehensible yet with Gosling putting in another exceptional performance (anyone else thinking the new Daniel Day Lewis with a tilt towards lighter subject matter) and a brilliantly selected supporting cast not only holds it together but makes you wonder how different this world would be if people were as supportive and considerate as they are here. This fillm is flawless and i for one will be following Gosling and Gillespie's future works closely. Spread the word.
