Baby Mama
Worth A Gander! - HSP
Sometimes I don't mind being dragged into chick flicks... especially when they are good. So far this year the standard has been excellent although there is always a couple of turkeys thrown in at some stage. This however, is no turkey, it's more like a peacock slowly opening it's plumage. Here we see successful businesswoman Kate (Tina Fey), still single & is 37 years young. She has always put her career ahead of a personal life & that's the reason she is where she is in her life. She desperately wants a baby & blurting it out to guys on a first date isn't bringing the results she hoped for. On a visit to her doctor she discovers she has only a million-to-one chance of getting pregnant. She looks into adoption & it's all a bit messy for her & takes years. She reads in a magazine about a company advertising the fact they supply a surrogate service. This she sees as her best option & on visiting the clinic which is run by Chaffee (Sigourney Weaver) she decides it's what she wants & even though the price is scandalous, she desperately want's to go ahead with it. She meets Angie (Amy Phoehler) & her obsessive brain dead boyfriend Carl (Dax Shepard). They are lower class citizens who need the money. She comes across as rough & ready but promises she will look after herself if she is carrying Kates baby. On hearing from Chaffee that Angie is pregnant, Kate starts reading childcare books, baby-proofing the apartment with special doors & researces what top pre-schools the child can attend. Her work is still keeping her busy as a property developer & her boss Barry is hilarious thanks to Steve Martin putting in an excellent shift as the hippi type peace loving executive, who rewards people by looking into their eyes for five minutes at a time. However Kates life is turned upside down when Angie splits with her boyfriend & lands on Kates doorstep looking for a place to stay. Kate is shocked, but sees this as a way of making sure her baby will be healthy as she can try to force Angie to eat proper food instead of junk. Here the story really gets going as they both try to cope with each others different way of doing things. Kate meets shop owner & smoothie maker Rob (Greg Kinnear) while looking for a place to build a new factory. Things start slowly but they do eventually start dating but she doesn't mention Angie or the situation she is in. Although the ending of this movie was signposted gigantically it still had a couple of surprises in store for us which is what made the whole thing work. Kate & Angies scenes together were great as they battled for pole position at every opportunity. Even though Steve Martin wasn't in this too much, you were always guaranteed a laugh as you just didn't know what he was going to come out with. So overall I have to say I really enjoyed this once it got going. I didn't know much about the lead girls before this but their comedy backgrounds sure helped their timing here. So I will give it a good 4 stars & would reccomend for anyone to give it a gander!
