From the awful Hulk to the excellent Spiderman, the comic book movie adaptation genre has really been a very mixed bag.   Recently however, this genre has fallen flat on its face. The Fantastic Four was an annoying and disappointing film, and the fact they they are going back for a second one flags to us all that this genre is gasping for breath. Spiderman 3 remains the only one we have to look forward to. Hopefully they won't make a balls of it.   However they did make a balls of Ghost Rider. A very, very big balls. In Mexico they might call this film a load of "Grandes Cojones". Here, however, we will call it what it is. Rubbish.   Nicholas Cage has showed he can act. Adaptation and even Family Man proved he is capable of being in and not ruining a film and that he can actually look like he belongs on screen. At the same time, he has been woefully miscast. Look at Con Air, a Bruckheimer action/comedy – although whether or not he director knows he is making comedies is a mystery. He looked so out of place in that movie with the long hair, big muscles and rediculous dialogue that I laughed my way through the whole charade.   Again, in Ghost Rider, he is so out of place that he is afraid to act. It' as if he knows he shouldn't be doing this so he really holds back. In years to come they will have robots to do parts like these. He never lets up to show any real humanity and attempts to show the man behind the Rider are pathetic and involve ridiculous scenes such as Cage staring at himself in the mirror. (What is it with Nic Cage and staring in the mirror?). The terrible characters are largely the director's fault as he skips past any sort of character development like it a disease. Cage though is to blame for no small part for this atrocity of a movie. He wrote some of it apparantly.   The plot is simple enough and actually gets off to an interesting start. We see how Cage gets into the position of becoming Ghost Rider and for the first act you could nod happily enough, looking forward to see how it all pans out for him. His incredibly annoying sidekick / helper friend doesn't let up with the slightly sad concern for Cage. Does he not have a life of his own? Why is he such good friends with Cage, and when he dies, why doesn't Cage get a bit more annoyed than just saying “Oh no” and subsequently never referring to his apparent best friends' demise? This just doesn't make sense and further weakens the humanity and credibility of Cage's character. At this stage we can really see how thinly drawn he is and how poor the scripting is.   There is a love interest of course and as Cage is on his mission as Ghost Rider to get the bad guy, the lovely Eva Mendes displays fine cleavage. Presumably to make up for how dreadful the actual film is – at least you get to see her in a tight white dress or waiting for Cage at dinner with some spectacular cleavage on show.   This movie is the harbinger of the demise of comic book adaptations. Ghost Rider comics were okay but with the wealth of material to choose from in this area there were better choices than this for a movie. My heart goes out to the real Ghost Rider fans who are going to be bitterly disappointed. Even if the film is completely true to it's comic book roots - the direction, and acting are so bad that very few people will be able to enjoy this.   Cage is largely responsible for this train wreck of a film, he really isn't acting and it's mid boggling to watch. At one point near the end he is pointing at the big bad guy and telling him off, but instead of any emotion at the so called climax, he rattles off the lines as if they were being fed to him through an earpiece. I was waiting for him to wink at the camera at one stage – as if to say "Hey I know my acting is awful but isn't this great fun?" No Nicholas, it's not.   Avoid at all costs. I don't think this film would even satisfy the biggest fans. It's boring, badly scripted, planned and directed and most of all, pointless, insulting and a waste of good money and time.
