National Treasure: Book of Secrets
Should Be Called National Teasure... Deja Vu! - HSP
I hadn't seen the first one of these & when asked to go to this I said I better get it out & have a gander so I would be fully tuned in to what to expect. I could have saved a few quid because having watched the first one I also saw the second one... they are so similiar. Nicholas Cage once again plays Ben Gates the treasure hunter who this time wants to clear the name of his great grandfather who is implicated in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln with some new evidence from a page in an old diary. All the good guys from part 1 are here in part 2 with the addition of Helen Mirren & Ed Harris who is the bad guy but sometimes the good guy then the bad guy again. The story moves too fast even though it's 2 hours long & one thing that peeded me off was the fact that every time they got a clue it was worked out in seconds. Now I have a brain too... (I think) if there is a bit of mystery in a movie I would like to partake in a little bit of brain cell burning once in a while. But not here... there's a clue... there's the answer. Early on we see a big car chase through the streets of London with no police cars in sight. London has one of the best CCTV systems for traffic in the world & yet we have taxi's overturning, a beer lorry dropping kegs all over the streets & gunmen hanging out of car windows firing randomly. When they come to a halt on a bridge over the Thames the bad guys have time to stop while one of them dives in to retrieve something & climb back up. They then discuss their next move (still on the bridge) with not even a siren to be heard! We all know they will find the treasure somewhere deep underground & everything will be old & collapsing when they arrive. We know they will be trapped for a while but will find a way out... didn't need any clues to work that out! The storyline itself is weak but has a few laughs along the way. There is a strong cast here which is an attraction in itself but the best actors in the world would struggle on the Oscars front if this is the only type of gigs they were offered. This only gets a 2 from me as it seems to be made up of left overs from the first one!
