Love in the Time of Cholera
Razzie alert! - bobbi Jones
The curse of an Oscar winner strikes again! Just like Halle Berry after Monster's Ball with Catwoman, poor Javier Bardem after No Country for Old Men, stars in an truly awful epic which makes Catwoman arthouse! (Incidentally, Benjamin Bratt who gets the girl in this film, was also Catwoman's love interest.) The main problem is the script. It's like a bad English translation from original Spanish, which makes all the actors sound like they're being dubbed. As a result, the portrayal of a love story of almost 52 years in 2 hrs & 10 mins was unintentionally humourous & unbeliveable with the visible rapid aging of the main characters, especially Bardem, sometimes in the space of minutes. Characaters were simply never onscreen long enough at any stage of their life for an audience to empathise with the plight of unrequited love. What was left was a series of 'carry on' skits with Bardem's sexual gymnastics, one of which involved an overweight kitty which like to lend its mistress a helping claw, as evidenced by the number of plasters on the poor man's back! Come back, Catwoman, all is forgiven!
