My Blueberry Nights is the most dreary film I have seen in a long time.It has a great cast so you wonder how in the name of all that's good could the director,Kai Wai Wong, have got it so abysmally wrong. It is like an amateur version of a Tennessee Williams play, all tragic figures embroiled in a Greek-style tragedy. It painstakingly, tells the tale of Elizabeth, who has been thwarted in love and spends her days in a cafe, owned by Jude Law playing an annoyingly chirpy Manchunian(Gawd èlp us!!)He feeds her with ...yes,you've guessed it...blueberry pie. There are loads of close-ups of the blueberries mingling with ice-cream which are no doube meant to be artistic or symbolic but are merely annoying. Anyway..Elizabeth goes across the States, working in restaurants ,meeting unbelievably gloomy, mopey characters,David Stathairn plays a melancholic alcoholic whose lovely wife Rachel Weisz plays a gloomy doomy nymphomaniac. Elizabeth also encounters Natalie Portman playing a poker whizz. The storyline is so cliched, predictable and jaw-achingly boring but this is not the worst paro of the film. There are long, long momemts of grainy,out-of-focus,through shutters and blinds shots, like an Edward Hopper picture but without any purpose. This film is depressingly awful.
