The Blair Witch Experiment Re-Hashed/Revisited/Reloaded (take your pick of dodgy Matrix sequels) crashes into Godzilla, only this time around showing you some vacuous members of the 'beautiful people' who panic their way into consistently stupid decisions for around 6 hours. One part of the original review I can agree with is that the less you know going in, the better, so I'm going to try not to give too much away plotwise (well nothing you shouldn't garner yourself from the moment the movie starts). "The Blair Witch Project" worked because the people involved were believable. Time was given to getting to know them in broad scenarios, it was only in the end that their actions became irrational and at that stage we, the audience, were as confused as they were, feeling their fear and panic, and so it worked. Here, we're basically introduced at a party to angst ridden twenty-somethings who look too pretty and act too cool. When chaos hits, the divde grows as we are taking in far more from what's going on than they are, thinking straighter and we were also remembering everything we'd every learned from Alien, Aliens, Godzilla, Outbreak, Starship Troopers and so on, movies that these self-obsessed, carb-fearing, airheads seemingly never had time to see because they were too busy puking back up the lettuce leaves they'd just had for breakfast, lunch or dinner. On the plus side, the action is handled well and a crumbling New York is mostly convincing but that's not only where this movie's strengths needed to lie. Indeed, to my mind, the whole thing rather shoots itself in the foot in the opening frames which pretty much tell you what will happen. The star of the show must surely be the hand-held it was shot on. I was truly amazed at it's battery life, it's image-quality/compression ratio and it's ability to survive more knocks than the Ballymun flats. It even had night vision! If anything good comes out of the movie, it would be to publicise what make and model that the camera was. Occasionally exciting but mostly unbelievable and featuring characters you will actually want the monster to eat, regurgitate and eat again, "Cloverfield" is very much a miss for me but that probably won't stop you going to see it and possibly even enjoying it.
