From the team that brought us Shaun of the dead and the TV series Spaced,Hot Fuzz is a homage to the buddy buddy cop film and a lot more. Set in the sleepy rural village of Sandford the film centres around top London cop Nicholas Angel(Simon Pegg) who gets relocated here from the city as he's making the rest of the force look bad. He's not too happy about it as he's a man who lives by the rules and at his first glance there isn't much action in Sandford. The action heats up with locals start dying in gruesome ways. Deaths are made to look like accidents but Angel has a hunch there's a killer at large. One of the funniest films I've seen in a long time and it is so full of gags(obvious and hidden) that my jaws were sore with laughter after seeing it for the first time.As with all of Pegg and Edgar Wrights(driector) work there is so many nods to genre classics(point break, wicker man, omen, scream) to keep the movie anoraks happy. There's a wonderful cast and basically a who's who of British comedy with Steve Coogan,Bill Nighy,Martin Freeman showing up early on for about 2 minutes. There's Bill Bailey,Paddy Considine(dead mans shoes)and Olivia Colman(Peep show) as part of the Sandford police force. Heavyweights like Edward Woodward(wicker man) and Billie Whilelaw(Omen) also amke appearances. Show is stolen by Pegg and long time collaborator Nick Frost along with a creepy performance from Timothy Dalton. The jokes are brilliant as expected the deaths are quite gory and the shoot outs wouldn't look out of place in a John Woo movie. A very enjoyable way to spend 2 hours!!
