Rustles Up A Good Show - pandabat

5 Points

Viewer Rating:pandabat has rated 3:10 To Yuma rating: 2 Star

A poor, struggling rancher agrees to help a posse escort the leader of a notorious gang of robbers to jail; a task made more difficult by the facts that his son decides to tag along and that the gang will do all in their power to rescue their head. While at first it seems that he is only in the dangerous endeavour for the money, it soon becomes clear that his motives run deeper. Christian Bale ably plays probably his most normal role to date as the farmer while Russell Crowe is in fine form as the villian. The supporting cast also features Henry Fonda, Gretchen Mol and Ben Foster, amongst others. I;m not the world's biggest fan of westerns but this is a movie that could easily have been set anywhere at any time and that works to its advantage. While there are a couple of super-clichéd moments, playing to broader interests makes this movie easily accessible and enjoyable for all and it certainly the first movie in which I've seen an exploding horse as part of a chase scene. If that doesn't make it worth watching, I don't know what will. Good, gritty, straightforward entertainment.
