Offensive - Eoghan Bolger
Hostel is a co-project by Eli Roth and Quentin Tarantino; it is an American gore film created in the style of the hugely underrated saw trilogy, however unlike saw hostel neither has a strong storyline, plot twists nor is it as innovative. Se7en and saw can rest easily knowing that hostel is of no threat to them.
The film opens with a group of teenagers on a world tour of who are eventually prompted to visit Slovakia on the pretence that the women there are to die for; little do they know that they should have taken that last part quite literally.
Hostel has its fair share of problems, the performances neither hold the viewers interest nor are they in any way believable.
The story is far too slow paced to be entertaining and at its core is quite weak, which means when the film finally gets to the point (much like the ring) we are treated to something quite disappointing . The poor pacing and inconstancy is largely due to very little happening between the torture scenes, everything feels rather uneventful.
Most of the film's beginning focuses on shock value such as the characters doing drugs, engaging in explicit sex scenes, drinking, walking around aimlessly or swearing.
The violence in Se7en and the saw trilogy was gruesome, however it was done in a decent manner, Hostel takes things too far and simply serves to repulse the viewer, making most of these scenes unwatchable. There isn't even enough here for fans of the genre, the scenes of torture are very short and infrequent.
Granted the film makes a good social point about young people and the sets are well done, some of the humour may raise a titter but other than that this really is not worth your time.
