Right, John Cussack is a legend, not so much in this.
Cussack is a sceptical ghost hunter who is yet to see a ghost. Then he stays in room 1408, the first hour has some nice set pieces nice chills and freaky songs on the radio etc, then there are so many red herrings thrown at the audience, that I tried to put on a set of waders!! If you are expecting a twisty turning roller coaster mystery, you won't get one here. This roller coaster is like the one in funderland, not so many loops too many turns and the only scare is when the 50 year old support girders creak. So in short, there are no answers given to the many questions you will ask of 1408, like what the hell is going on? and why are you here? Without Cussack this film would have been awful but his performance allows you to tolerate the mundane plot conventions and nonsensical events.
If you are looking for a big build up to utter disappointment get married, failing that there is always 1408
