A worthy entry to the franchise - Eoghan Bolger
Prometheus is a science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott, it stars Nomi Rapace , Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender. The movie is been billed as a prequel to the Alien franchise and follows a group of scientists travelling to the alien homeworld to conduct an investigation there on the origins of mankind.
The film is 124 minutes long.
I was very unsure of this film, but with Ridley Scott as the helmer I pushed on and decided to give this a chance. The 70s alien movie was a classic and even though I'm not a sci-fi nut (more a drama, mystery and comedy fan) I enjoyed it, it was followed up by a few okay sequels , hit or miss comics books and some bad spinoffs.
Prometheus feels like alien's greatest hits, its got great action like the second movie and while also capturing the atmosphere and tension of the first. This pays lipservice to and relates relevantly in terms of tone and plot to the franchise.
If you're a Geiger fan, you'll be treated to well made backdrops, tech and scenery inspired by his artwork. Early parts of the movie gave me feelings I got when I read Lovecraft's mountains of madness novel.
The acting by Theron is particularly good as is Fassbender's but one should also note Rapace, who is the best we're going to get to an equivalent to Ripley . The dialogue however and attempts at humor are a bit spotty however.
Does this top the original though or Blade runner? No, I'm not sure that could be done but it comes close and is a faithful entry to the series, pleasantly leaving the Alien vs Predator movies redundant and as Empire mentioned I believe removed from canon.
You know you've found a good film when the fairly long runtime seems to pass by quickly and fairly unnoticed, this was paced well and balanced out action and plot neatly.
At the same time however we can surely truth be told say that this dead horse has been beaten much too far even if getting the original creator back was in it's favour. There is every chance this will be milked of its worth. The story while good does still feel a bit like a re-thread even though Prometheus could be called its, at the same time own.
Verdict: *** ˝
