Just back from seeing The Cabin in the Woods and I am happy to give a positive review.

It's been a while since I felt the need to write a review, purely because of all mindless over budgeted, predictable cheese that has been filling the screens for so long had numbed my movie going experience.

The Cabin in the Woods was initally due for release around the end of 2009 or the beginning of 2010 but due the dreaded recession money was pulled and distribution was out on hold. I had heard of the movie back then and was really disappointed that it would be delayed (or possibly never shown) as I am a huge admirer of Joss Whedon's prior venture into main stream cinema. (the criminally underrated 'Serenity').

So, here we are a few years later and I'm happy to say this was a really entertaining movie.

We start with some everyday office banter between Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford's work colleagues as they discuss their sister agencies activities in an upcoming 'event'. We then jump straight to the group of hot young twenty somethings playing teenagers (as ye do) setting off on a weekend trip to a cousin's cabin in the woods.

'Ah, I know where this is going!', I here you say.... WRONG!

Cabin in the Woods is the type of movie you can't discuss in reviews because any hint of what goes on will ruin the viewers experience. It is its own animal. It flows along at a very steady pace, is self aware and funny when you leaste expect it and gory and frightening at the most random times.

Whedon has done a pretty solid job with the writing here and Drew Goddard (directing his first movie & co writing) does a stellar job transmitting the script to screen.

An entertaining blend of horror, sci-fi, supernatural thriller and comedy...

highly recommended.
