A well rounded movie. - Eoghan Bolger
The dexcendents is a comedy-drama film starring George Clooney, Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Shailene Woodley, Beau Bridges, Robert Forster, it is directed by Alexander Payne and focuses on a man who must deal with raising his two young, difficult daughters following a boating accident that puts his wife in the hospital.
The movie two hours long.
There is always the risk a comedy drama takes, will it lose out on one aspect of the genre it embodies or will one interfere with the other? Luckily this problem is not present in the Descendents which mixes its two different genres well without becoming overthetop or too angsty/melodramatic.
Though Clooney is a diverse actor and puts on a fine performance it's the two actresses that play his daughters that are particularly impressive, especially the younger one, both invoke the most sympathies and emotions from the audience and like Clooney's character though obnoxious at first develop wonderfully into more likeable people that you care about.
It was good that the film grounded itself in believability and reality , didn't waste too much time and concluded free of objectionable clichés.
Where the trouble with the Descendents lies is in its dull opening narrative, it takes a few minutes to pick up and the ending is stretched out a bit too long, you can also tell when the film is pulling its full weight and when it isn't, though sporting plentiful well written drama scenes, there are a few that shine above others.
